Cochlear Implant Surgery Resumed at Our Hospital

Cousins who were cut off from the world came to life with cochlear implants .

Ayşe and Inceesu Selçuk, who have hearing problems in Malatya, underwent cochlear implant surgery at the Turgut Ozal Medical Center. He said the operation was a success . Teaching member Ismail Demir said that early treatment contributed significantly to the development of language and speech.

In Malatya, cousins Inceesu Selçuk (14) and Ayşe Selçuk (6), who did not benefit from hearing aids for some time and had limited communication, had a scent implant (artificial ear) operation at the Turgut Ozal Medical Center of Inonu University.

KBB Specialist Dr. Teaching member Ismail Demir told the ILKHA reporter how the operation went, what will be done and what should be taken care of, and how happy families are that their children are able to communicate with the world again.

"When this method is applied at an early age, there is sufficient gain in terms of both language and speech"

The doctor who gave me the information about what a cochlear implant is . Faculty member Ismail Demir said, "The cochlear implant is an advanced technological treatment method that we do to our patients with advanced and very advanced degree of hearing loss who do not receive adequate response from hearing aid treatment. When we apply this method of treatment at an early age, we gain enough gains in terms of language and speech".

"We decided to implant them because they didn't benefit from the hearing aid".

Dr. Demir, a member of the faculty who was evaluating the process of Ayşe and İncesu cousins, used the following expressions:

"Ayşe and İncesu used hearing aids, so we decided to implant them because they didn't benefit from the hearing aids anymore.

Dr. Stern , who also discussed the planning of the process , Demir said, "In the next process, we will provide this kind of diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitation process to our patients with hearing loss in our own department, in our own branch of medicine, together with our assistants and audiologists".

"After five years in our facility, we're back to our olfactory implant operations".

Dr. Demir said that after 5 years in their centers, they are starting to operate on the cochlear implants again.

"We took a five-year break from operations and asked our experienced instructors for help. Professor Dr. Turgut Karlıdag, who works at the Department of Main Sciences of the University of the Euphrates in Elazığ, came to visit us. We've had two surgeries with him. We didn't have any problems. Our patients are fine now. I hope we can discharge our patients in three days. After about three months of training, we're thinking about making children hear. And then we have a rehabilitation process. It's not just a surgeon, actually. We also need support from our families".

Referring to the criteria for cochlear implants, Demir said, "When our hearing-impaired patients first come to us, when we detect hearing loss, we begin treatment with the existing hearing aid. They've been using it for three months. Three months later, if they're benefiting from the hearing aid, we'll continue to do so. But after a while, in our patients with hearing loss due to other causes, the hearing aid may not be useful".

"It's a very expensive operation, but our state pays for it".

Dr. Stern, who also explained the conditions of the operation, Iron said, "It has audiological properties, it has radiological properties. Children's ears should be suitable for this operation. Of course, these operations are expensive. It's a very expensive operation out there, but our state pays for it. These surgeries can only be performed in the third stage in large hospitals like ours".

"When the device doesn't work for three months, the implant can be done after six months".

As for children with congenital hearing loss, Dr. Demir reported:

"We detect our patients with congenital hearing loss immediately. We recommend the device for three months after we've tracked it down. If you use the device for three months and it doesn't work, you can have an implant after six months. In the first four years, if the headphones are appropriate, they pay for a two-way operation. We have conditions for a child's language development. The chronological age and language age should not be more than four years old".

"We can do implant surgery on adults".

The same method can be applied to adult patients , Dr. Iron said, "We can do it in adults. There's no hearing loss before, but then there's a problem like meningitis that develops, and if there's a hearing loss and it fits those conditions, we can do implant surgery on our adult patients".

"They don't have any age-related problems when they're treated early".

Referring to the importance of early treatment, Iron used the following expressions:

"When we operate on our patients with hearing loss at an early age, these individuals do not experience any problems in terms of language, speech, or social development relative to their age. If they don't get treatment, they're left behind in terms of language, social and motor skills. Our late-onset patients are able to capture their own age with about two to three years of rehabilitation".

"Patience and family support are the key to success"

It 's Dr. Iron said, "There are some things that need to be taken into consideration because our implant is a device that is later attached. Kids are a little more prone to trauma. Families have important responsibilities in this regard. They need to protect their children and support the education process. Their patience and support is the key to success".

Finally, Dr. Demir said, "Because we haven't had an olfactory implant in five years, our patients have been going to other cities.

"We expect them to get better results"

Selçuk's mother, Hüsniye Selçuk, said: "My daughter used a hearing aid for two years. Our doctors decided to implant because they didn't get enough of the hearing aid anymore. He had an implant two days ago. Now we're waiting for better results. Salute to the hard work of our teachers. Thank you very much".

"Our teachers made our children laugh, and God make them laugh".

Mother-in-law and grandmother Kadriye Selçuk expressed their feelings in these words:

"I'm someone's grandmother, I'm someone's grandmother. My grandchildren used behind-the-ear devices because of hearing loss. Because they couldn't produce any more, our doctors gave them implants, for God's sake. May my Lord grant this happiness to all. Our teachers have made the faces of our children laugh, and may God make their faces laugh".
